Whistling its melody smiling in the air is the best medicine for any kind of depression. Its motivating message of positivity is always effective, because each of its notes generates calm and happiness. What a great truth that when life punishes you with a problem, thinking about it makes it double. The best thing to do is to forget it.
The American wrote this call to indolence and nonchalance in a humorous tone, taking as a basis a famous phrase that the Indian spiritual master Meher Baba pronounced in the sixties after suffering an automobile accident and that became very popular when it was incorporated into greeting cards all over the world. In fact, McFerrin discovered it on a poster hanging on a wall in the San Francisco apartment of Tuck Andress and Patti Cathcart, the husband and wife jazz band Tuck & Patti. He was struck by the simplicity of that thought and turned it into a musical work.
His combination of the cult of stoicism and Spartanism is such that he even dispenses with instruments, to recreate them a capella, only with the voice. The rhythm is provided by the tapping of the fingers and the whistles sustained by three chords that are repeated throughout the song. It seems easy to write such a simple vocal pop song, but it is really complicated to find the right key.
