La verbena de la Paloma -subtitulada El boticario y las chulapas y celos mal reprimidos- es una zarzuela de 1894 con libreto de Ricardo de la Vega y música de Tomás Bretón. Se estrenó el 17 de febrero de 1894 en el Teatro Apolo de Madrid. Posteriormente fue adaptada al cine en 1921 por José Buchs, en 1935 como Feria de la Paloma por Benito Perojo[1] y en 1963 como La Feria de la Paloma por José Luis Sáenz de Heredia.
El embajador de España en Argentina recordó a todo el personal artístico de los estrenos en la capital bonaerense en 1894, confirmando que La Verbena se estrenó con tres meses de diferencia en tres teatros, siendo la versión más popular la primera en la que participó la familia Videgain.
La escena 2 tiene lugar en una calle del barrio de la Latina. Una multitud, entre la que se encuentran Susana, Casta y Tía Antonia, se ha reunido para escuchar a una cantante de flamenco cantar En Chiclana me crié. Tía Antonia interrumpe a la cantante alabando su actuación; Susana y Casta intentan calmarla. Los miembros del público comentan favorablemente la actuación.
