We’ll have to see if she succeeds in making an idea that has worked on some occasions, but that is by no means infallible -the case most remembered by many is that of Lauren Bacall, who had to stay in her seat when Juliette Binoche’s name was read out. There will be time to talk about it, but what should matter to us now is that Close is excellent in a film that relies on its two protagonists -especially her-, perhaps too much.

‘The Good Wife’ is a film that sits on a lie and the lengths to which its two makers are willing to take it. However, it’s not something that this adaptation of Meg Wolitzer’s novel poses head-on, preferring to see how the events of the past affect the present of Joan, the character played by Close, something that translates into the possibility of a much more nuanced performance that she makes the most of to perfection.

The problem is that those negative consequences also have a downside: the flashbacks never quite work as well and feel like they’re dragging out a revelation that the viewer sees coming too soon. In addition, they also lack Close, which causes another drop in interest. To be fair, there’s nothing in the flashbacks that’s annoying, but it does feel more conventional, taking the shine off the film.

But it also talks about marital relationships, education, sports, the Swedish invasion, religion, censorship, radio, sexuality and even choirs and dances. Humor allows us to talk about very serious subjects and that is what we have set out to do with this work. The authors do not judge whether those times were worse, we just limit ourselves to give voice to three women who live everyday situations and through them the viewers will be the ones to draw their own conclusions.

To tackle this project we saw the need to have a series of playwrights, three women and three men, giving each of them the independence to write a story with particular female characters in different situations. That the authors of this dramaturgy would not influence each other, nor depend on a predefined story line, was a pact that we instituted from the beginning of the project as something fundamental. Despite its variety, the work was recast in an original and definitive text in an organic way because all the authors were imbued with the feelings of those women. For the whole team the result has been enriching, substantially motivated by that essential axis of the woman of that time, the submissive woman who works in silence, who sacrifices herself and lives for others, renouncing her own life to put it at the service of her husband, her children and her country.

The story of the protagonist of The Wife is not very different from that of Russian director Yuliya Solntseva: both sacrificed their personal lives to support their husbands, even at the expense of the recognition of their own creativity.

Being an actress is the least secure profession in the world. You never know where the next job will come from, so you choose what you can and not always what you want. What is true is that my bets have always been very subjective. I’m capable of working with any director and take a chance with any actor if I know I have a great director, but not with the story, I don’t play with that.

A lot can be conveyed through a husband’s use of the phrase “The Wife” and almost none of its meanings indicate a person as a respected equal. It is at this level that The Wife shows its ability to expose how patriarchy can ensnare a victim willing to sacrifice to the limit of her frailty, for love.
