They are all of the same style. Viewers of the film by Italian Luca Guadagnino (Sicily, 1971) continually refer to the movie as an experience that lasts two hours and twelve minutes in front of their eyes and several months behind them. “I can’t stop thinking about it”. “I will be angry and sad forever.” “I’ve never felt so devastated after watching a movie.” “I want to watch Call me by your name again, but I felt so sad the first time I saw it that I don’t know if I can hold back any more tears.”

It’s funny how this story works and the feelings it stirs up. For all practical purposes, there are not too many concessions to melodrama in Call me by your name. No one dies. No one gets physically hurt. The characters barely cry. There is no moralizing in its discourse. The message is positive: two characters from two corners of the world meet and experience an intense summer love at a time and place where it was almost impossible for that to happen.

And, in addition, the romance, postponed throughout the film in a very clever way so that the viewer feels an almost physical longing for the moment to arrive, explodes as a celebration of urgency, carnality, the physical need to be attached to the other. Dynamiting the rules of what should be a love relationship on the screen, the viewer will not find in it even a couple crisis between the second and the third act.

It was directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by James Ivory, based on the novel of the same name by André Aciman (2007). The film is an international production and belongs to Guadagnino’s “Desire” trilogy along with Io sono l’amore (2009) and Blinded by the Sun (2015).

The film had been in development since 2007, when producers Peter Spears and Howard Rosenman acquired the rights to the novel. Ivory was tapped to direct it but ultimately served as screenwriter. Guadagnino, who was to serve as location consultant, was chosen as director in 2016. Filming took place in Crema between May and June 2016. The film was shot on 35mm reels under the command of cinematographer Sayombhu Mukdeeprom.

Elio and Oliver start spending time together. Elio begins a sexual relationship with Marzia and brags about it in front of Oliver to gauge his reaction. During a trip to the post office, Elio subtly confesses his feelings for Oliver, who gently tells him that he should not act on them. They go to a place exclusive to Elio, and he kisses Oliver on the lips. Oliver returns the gesture, but hesitates to go further. The couple becomes distant over the next few days.
