This upcoming second Copa del Rey final between the Red and Whites and the Blue and Whites will recall a ‘healthy’ rivalry of more than a century between eternal enemies to become the best Basque team, including controversial transfers of players between the two that have dynamited the supposed good relations between two entities that hate each other more than love each other, although always in a civilized manner.

In the opposite camp, lesser is the amount of Athletic’s change for Real Sociedad, with Remiro, Urra, Alkiza and the legendary Rafa Iriondo, among others, who could be joined from the bench by Javier Clemente and José Mari Amorrortu -from Lezama to Zubieta-.

From Donosti they have boasted of having the successor of Paul the octopus, that mythical octopus of the World Cup in South Africa. However, the octopus Pello, from the Aquarium of Donostia, seems to have been a hoax. A joke devised by El Diario Vasco, a press positioned on the txuri urdin side, which had decided beforehand that Real Sociedad would win against Athletic.

Against all odds, note the irony, the champion will have to be decided on the field of play. The final of the Copa del Rey will be played on April 3 at the La Cartuja stadium in Seville. The final will decide whether Athletic or Real Sociedad are worthy of a title, even if Pello the octopus thinks he has already decided it.

Pello the octopus was very well orchestrated. There were two jars. One was dressed in the colors and crest of Athletic and the other in the colors and crest of Real Sociedad. Finally, the octopus from the Aquarium of San Sebastian mysteriously opted for the team of his city.
