Un trío de excelentes interpretaciones y una mirada inquebrantable a la autenticidad emocional son las señas de identidad de la intensa ópera prima del español Lino Escalera, No se dice adiós. Este sombrío pero conmovedor estudio de las diferentes reacciones de dos hijas ante la noticia de la inminente muerte de su padre es directo y sin tapujos en su retrato de las emociones incómodas, dando lugar a un drama familiar sobre el daño que se puede hacer cuando los sentimientos largamente inexpresados finalmente tienen que ser confrontados. La película, austera, reflexiva y maravillosamente interpretada, recibió varios premios en el festival de Málaga, entre ellos el de mejor actriz para la destacada Nathalie Poza; merece, al menos, una mayor exposición en festivales.
El viudo José Luis (el veterano Juan Diego, una presencia siempre valiosa en cualquier proyecto), huraño y poco comunicativo, está claramente en las últimas, tosiendo y balbuceando en una interpretación física que le hace estremecerse, y que debe suponer un gran esfuerzo para su cuerpo de 74 años. Su hija Carla (Poza, que recientemente ha participado en Julieta, de Pedro Almodóvar) es una ejecutiva de rango medio que se refugia de sus tediosas y malhumoradas jornadas de trabajo con noches alimentadas por el alcohol, la cocaína y los coqueteos agresivos con hombres 20 años menores que ella.

“No sé decir adiós” is a good film about death and everything that surrounds it. A promising debut film by Lino Escalera. But, as often happens in the world of cinema, it had the bad luck of coinciding in time with a masterpiece of the same theme but infinitely superior: “Morir” by Fernando Franco.
Escalera’s film does not even come close to Franco’s film. It lacks its depth, its tearfulness, its desperation, its nausea. “I don’t know how to say goodbye” is worth more as a family x-ray than as a balcony at the end of life. And in that aspect it does work, because its three characters (father and two daughters) are very well drawn and transcend the clichés typical of this type of film.
