The protector Alba is part of FAPAM, they have been able to keep the cats and dogs indoors. “In our case, the shelter is prepared so that the animals can be sheltered. They are less able to move around because they are inside, but this way we prevent them from suffering hypothermia,” says Alba’s president, Carolina.

For her, it has been “lucky” to have the association’s volunteers. “We could not access the center because of the snow, but we have two people living in the center and they have been able to maintain the shelter as best they could,” she says.

In another of the centers managed by Alba, a volunteer, upon seeing the situation on Friday when the snow began to fall, decided to stay there with the animals in order to care for them. “He lay down to sleep with the dogs. Then we had to go with snowshoes on our feet to bring them food,” says Carolina.

Animal embrace

This weekend will be held in Madrid the XVI Pet Adoption Fair which, as a novelty, will recover the presentiality, since in 2020 this event organized by the regional Executive was virtual due to the pandemic. The event will take place Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 November from 11.00 to 19.00 hours in the esplanade of the King located next to the bridge of Segovia, in Madrid Rio.

The animals for adoption come from a dozen animal shelters, in addition to the Centro Integral de Acogida de Animales de la Comunidad de Madrid (CIAAM), the Colegio Oficial de Veterinarios de Madrid (COLVEMA) and the Centro de Protección Animal del Ayuntamiento de Madrid (Animal Protection Center of the Madrid City Council).

The organization will set up fifty tents where visitors will be able to see them, interact with them, and if they wish, start the process that will culminate later in the shelter where the animal is.

The Animal Protection Center of the Madrid City Council (CPA) is an animal shelter managed by the Madrid City Council, through the autonomous organization Madrid Salud, attached to the Government Area of Health, Safety and Emergencies.

This center has a veterinary team that, in addition to managing the facilities, offers rabies vaccination service, information to the user, and veterinary care of the animals in shelter.

In the Casita del Pescador, located in the Retiro Park, the City Council has set up an Adoption Counseling Center. There they advise us on what adoption means and on responsible pet ownership. They can also manage our reservation at the CPA.

The CPA offers us the possibility of adopting an abandoned dog with all the guarantees of vaccination, deworming and hygiene. We can see them in the center itself in the web page of the center enabled for that purpose.

We cannot fail to mention all those citizens and volunteers without whose anonymous and quiet work it would not be possible that hundreds, thousands of animals are cared for and have the opportunity to find a dignified life.

The CPA has a limited space for housing, which guarantees the best sanitary conditions for the animals and facilitates their return. If you find it outside the municipality of Madrid, please contact the Centro Integral de Acogida de Animales de la Comunidad de Madrid (CIAAM) or the local authorities of your municipality.

We will come as soon as possible. Priority is given to animals that are sick, injured or pose a risk to the health or welfare of citizens. You can help by bringing them to the CPA or to a veterinary clinic.
