things to do in madrid during covid

In the time of Fernando VI, several promenades were created throughout the southern part of the city up to the Manzanares River. They serve as access to the city and as a recreational area for the citizens. The promenades are arranged in a trident: three streets that leave from the same square. The neighborhood of La Chopera is located between two of these promenades, which started from the current traffic circle of Emperor Charles V: the Delicias, to the east, which led to the area known as the Delicias del río, and Santa María de la Cabeza, to the west, which led to the hermitage of the same name. Many of them are named after the trees planted in them, such as the Chopera.

In 1770, Carlos III approved the construction of the Real Canal del Manzanares, a project that had been contemplated for two centuries to make the Manzanares navigable to the Tajo and from there to Seville. The land of the Arganzuela pasture was chosen for the headwaters. However, much of the land was occupied by private individuals, as the heirs of the former owners of the meadow had been occupying the common lands, so that in 1772 a new demarcation had to be made, which led to a series of lawsuits.

Matadero Madrid is a living and changing space at the service of creative processes, participatory artistic training and dialogue between the arts. It was born with the desire to contribute to the reflection on the contemporary socio-cultural environment and with the vocation to support the processes of construction of the culture of the present and the future.

In Roman Signer’s work, the artistic act assumes a predominantly experimental character, which implies valuing the notions of contingency, duration and unpredictability. All this is done with a disconcerting simplicity, with an imagery that oscillates between a sense of absurdity, violence and melancholy, but from which, at the same time, emanates an innocent energy and surprising humor.

In this context, film (and more recently video) has been a privileged medium for the realization or documentation of events. On display in this exhibition is a selection of 10 16 mm films that Roman Signer made in the 1970s and 1980s. This selection has focused on works that are related to fire, which should be understood as a response of the artist to the characteristics of the Abierto x Obras room, specifically to the presence of vestiges of a fire that happened in the past.
