In the first third of the century, the zarzuela was maintained with productions that sometimes followed the musical structure of an Italian opera, thanks to authors of the stature of Francisco Alonso, José Padilla, Pablo Sorozábal, Federico Moreno Torroba, Tomas Barrera Saavedra, Rafael Calleja, Pablo Luna, José Serrano Simeón and Jacinto Guerrero.
In the Philippines, the popularity of zarzuelas gave way to the indigenization of this genre. During the American colonization, sarswelas (the indigenous form) were a major form of showing resistance to foreign forces. Honorata ‘Atang’ de la Rama was known as the Queen of the Philippine Sarswela. This art form is also called zarzuela in various parts of the country.
In Argentina zarzuela began to spread in the second half of the 19th century at the same time that tango was being generated, from the fusion of diverse local styles, of African, gaucho and indigenous origin, and others contributed by immigrant contingents from different parts of the world that were arriving in large numbers to the country.
La verbena de la paloma
Its name comes from the Zarzuela Palace in Madrid (palace built by order of King Philip IV in the seventeenth century as a hunting lodge) which was the first place where it was represented for the first time and was “The jungle of love” eclogue by Lope de Vega.
Ricardo de la Vega wrote the libretto of La verbena de la Paloma from a real event that he heard from the lips of the protagonist himself; the subject seemed interesting and he only had to surround it with an environment that was conducive to it and characters that did not clash.
It tells the love story between Paloma and Lamparilla. The comic tone, the adventures of the protagonists and the reflection of two parallel social worlds are some of the elements that define this work.
The libretto is inspired by the Gran Vía construction project. It does not have a defined plot, but deals with the reality of the moment with political allusions and allusions to the municipal administration.
The tables are turned, and now it is Ascensión who enjoys a good position thanks to a business lawsuit won by her father. The opposite happens to Joaquín, as his father has gone bankrupt. Now Joaquín has to work in the mechanical workshop to be able to finish his engineering studies. Everything is already conducive to a clear and noble love between Ascension and Joaquin.
