The master Hayao Miyazaki, the Japanese animation genius, fell for the short Father and Daughter (2000), a film that won Dutch animator Michael Dudok de Wit (Utrecht, 1953) an Oscar. “And then they sent me an email from their studio Ghibli asking me if I wanted to do a co-production with them. It was a shock,” recalls Dudok de Wit. “The most incredible thing happened at the first meeting: they gave me absolute freedom. Ghibli was producing a European! And without controlling him at all!”. Se queda dormido junto a ella. Por la mañana, el hombre se sorprende al encontrar a una mujer pelirroja inconsciente dentro del caparazón, que se ha abierto. Va a buscar agua para ella y construye un refugio para protegerla del sol. Cuando llueve, la mujer se despierta y va a nadar. La mujer arroja la concha a la deriva en el mar y el hombre hace lo mismo con su balsa. Los dos se enamoran.
