the trial of the chicago 7

In this selection we can find films of all kinds, from independent proposals loaded with violence as ‘Bodies at rest’ by Renny Harlin to big franchises that sweep the box office, such as the ‘Transformers’ saga created by Michael Bay, most of the ‘Mission Impossible’ films with Tom Cruise as Ethan Huntn or the ‘Target: The White House’ films. But Hollywood is not all that one can find in the Netflix catalog: the best Asian thriller, from ‘The night comes for us’ (a cake fest with the best, Iko Uwais) to ‘Bodies at rest’ (an unmissable novelty in charge of the well-known Renny Harlin), also lives on the ‘streaming’ platform, along with samples with European touches such as ‘Bronx’ and ‘Sentinel’. And of course there is no shortage of Netflix original films, such as the acclaimed ‘The Old Guard’ with Charlize Theron, the crazy ‘6 in the Shadows’ by Michael Bay (‘Transformers’) or ‘Triple Frontier’ by JC Chandor, with a spectacular cast with Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam and Pedro Pascal.

A sort of Asian version of ‘Aladdin’ full of good intentions, which make it perhaps too obvious in certain scenes, but in return it knows how to conquer you through its characters, an entertaining story and an eye-catching visual finish.

A somewhat unbalanced drama, since its first 20-25 minutes are sensational, especially the extensive and intense childbirth scene, and then never quite hit the key it is looking for. That does not detract from the fact that Vanessa Kirby’s work is also excellent then, without forgetting the more than estimable contributions of Ellen Burstyn or Shia LaBeouf.

A very enjoyable supernatural slasher based on the popular literary saga of R. L. Stine but that seems to have in ‘Scream’ its main reference. With a well-chosen cast and generous enough in the scenes of violence, it is a film that knows what it sets out to do and how to achieve it to make the viewer have a good time without neglecting the story of this first installment or forgetting the mythology that should connect it with the next two parts of the trilogy.

Few films have been able to portray in such a real, forceful and painful way the scourge of gender violence. Icíar Bollaín made history of our cinema with this film, starring Laia Marull and Luis Tosar, which reflects how a relationship ends up becoming a daily torture, how a man ends up becoming a monster and a woman is locked in a cage from which it is almost impossible to get out. Overwhelming.

If you like romantic comedies, you can’t miss this great proposal directed by Dani de la Orden and starring Susana Abaitua (‘Patria) and Álvaro Cervantes. And, although it goes through all the common spaces of the genre, it also leaves a necessary message about mental illness and love. This is the story of a journalist skeptical about love who falls in love with a mysterious woman who, as he discovers, is in a psychiatric hospital.

If you are looking for a horror movie that combines jump-out-of-the-couch scares and a story to get excited about, ‘Voices’ is a great option. Directed by Ángel Gómez Hernández, it takes us to an old mansion where a family moves in with the intention of renovating it, without knowing that inside it hide some secrets that will mark their lives forever. It is undoubtedly one of the best horror movies on Netflix that we recommend you.
