Initially conceived as a concept album in French, the first staging of Les Misérables debuted in September 1980 at the Palais des Sports in Paris, where it was performed for three months until the venue’s booking contract expired.

On the eve of the Paris revolution of 1832, Valjean prepares to go into exile, while Cosette and Marius mourn their separation and Eponine weeps over Marius’ unrequited love. Enjolras encourages the people of Paris to rise up and prepares with the rest of the students for battle. Marius hesitates between following Cosette or joining the revolt, but finally makes the decision to fight. Javert infiltrates the revolution incognito and the Thénardiers rejoice at the prospect of plundering the corpses of those who will die in battle. Everyone wonders what fate will befall them the next day (One Day More).

As the rebels build a barricade in the street, Javert poses as one of them and volunteers to spy on the government troops. Marius discovers that Eponine has joined the revolt disguised as a boy and tells her to leave because it is dangerous, but the young woman decides to stay by his side. Marius then asks her to take a farewell letter to Cosette to draw her friend away from the barricade. When Eponine arrives at Cosette’s house, she meets Valjean at the entrance and he promises to deliver the letter to her daughter, but instead she reads the contents and discovers Marius and Cosette’s relationship (Building the Barricade). Eponine walks alone through the streets of Paris and regrets her unrequited love (On My Own). In spite of everything, she decides to return to the barricade to be with Marius.
