The difference between a dwarf and a midget

Dwarffolklore

Most types of dwarfism are caused by a genetic change (mutation) in the egg or sperm that occurs before conception (pregnancy). Others are due to genetic changes inherited from one or both parents.  Genetic changes occur randomly. There is nothing a parent can do before or during pregnancy to prevent this change from occurring. A genetic counselor can help determine the chances of having a child with dwarfism.

Depending on the type of dwarfism, it is possible for two parents of average height to have a short child. It is also possible for two short parents to have a child of average height.

Dwarfism caused by skeletal dysplasia usually results in disproportionately short stature. This means that the proportions of the limbs (arms and legs) and trunk are different from those of people of average height.

The most common skeletal dysplasia is achondroplasia. This is a short-limb dwarfism that affects one in 25,000 people in all races and ethnic groups. People with achondroplasia have a relatively long trunk, with shorter than normal upper arms and legs.  This is most noticeable in the upper arms and legs (called “rhizomelic shortening”).

Dwarfism causes

Today, gnomes are often thought of as the dwarves from the famous Snow White fairy tale. Although they are called dwarves, they are also called gnomes due to the great influence of modern literature. Since they became available in modern literature gnomes began to be used to decorate gardens.

On the other hand, dwarves were first introduced in the written records of Norse mythology. The term “dwarf” comes from the Old Norse word “dvegr”; Old English word “dweorg”; and the Old German words “gitwerc” and “zwerc.”    Dwarves are mentioned a lot in Snorri Sturluson’s poems. This written work by Snorri is a wonderful compilation of poems collected from a rich, traditional source. In this great piece of literature, dwarves are described as creatures with the same characteristics of Ymir’s worms being primordial.

Dwarfism is hereditary

The main difference between dwarf and midget is that the term dwarf refers to any adult human below the height of 58 inches with abnormal body proportions, while a dwarf refers to tiny individuals with well-proportioned body parts.

A dwarf is a short individual with well-proportioned body parts. Sometimes malnutrition can cause dwarf conditions. Dwarf individuals grow normally but do not exceed 58 inches.

Although the two terms refer to short individuals, the main difference between dwarf and midget is the proportionality of the body parts. Dwarfs have disproportionate body parts, and because of this, suffer from some medical conditions, whereas midgets have well-proportioned body parts …
