Cepeda de la sierra

Villanueva del conde

Villanueva del Conde is located on top of a hill, surrounded by the characteristic abrupt landscapes of the mountains, with mountains furrowed by beautiful valleys created by rivers, streams and streams that maintain a varied and abundant vegetation.

Coal, along with grazing, own crops, wine, flax and wax were the mainstay of the local economy in the past, making muleteers (or trajineros) from many parts of the peninsula traveled their roads to bring their products to other places and, from there, bring other items to the villages of the mountains.

This openness to the outside world derived from the old trades, and the interest in socioeconomic and cultural exchange, are maintained today. Confirming that Cepeda is still open to outsiders, to the world.

Cepeda invites its visitors to discover the rich mountain culture, its rural heritage and its natural environment, but with the particularity of offering more tranquility and its own image, very particular, within the towns of Castilla y León.

The most important domestic species were pigs, horses and goats, although nowadays they have practically disappeared. Almost every house had one or more of the above mentioned species.

It seems that Cepeda has been inhabited since ancient times. Vestiges found allow to affirm that it is seated on a pre-Roman castro. The Romans also occupied this space located next to one of their roads. An altar, a column and other remains attest to this. The Visigoth period has been recorded in pieces of slate and ceramic remains. Later it was a land of Moors and Jews. Reflections of the former are reflected in the clothing, architecture and legends; of the latter, in the lintels of the houses, reaffirming their conversion. The so-called House of the Jews, now in ruins, also evokes the presence of this group in Cepeda.

After this important moment, the town wrote the history of the daily life of its inhabitants, as attested by the preserved notarial protocols. Without major events, even if they affected it, they were always written elsewhere.
