Con un fuerte énfasis en la apariencia y los elementos gráficos, originalmente se dividía en secciones como Hoy, que cubría la política nacional; Venezuela Adentro, que cubría las noticias nacionales; Cartelera Cinematográfica; Vida de Juan Vicente Gómez (caricaturas); El Cuento de Hoy; El Rincón de la Mujer; Crónicas del Ávila (piezas de varios colaboradores invitados); además de secciones dedicadas a deportes y otros temas.
A mediados de 2002 el periódico comenzó a imprimirse en color en todas las páginas[5]. Entre 2004 y 2006 lanzó cuatro ediciones regionales (para diferentes zonas de la Gran Caracas) además de la nacional[5].
En 2013, el financiero británico Robert Hanson compró Ultimas Noticias para su empresa privada Hanson Family Holdings por una cifra que se reporta como 98 millones de dólares. En 2014, fue acusado por el personal del periódico de convertirlo en “un portavoz del Partido Socialista”, pero el director, Héctor Dávila, respondió que sus únicas instrucciones de Hanson eran “dirigir un periódico equilibrado y rentable”[1].
