Las Provincias Internas, también conocidas como Comandancia y Capitanía General de las Provincias Internas, fue una circunscripción administrativa del Imperio Español creada en 1776 para dotar de mayor autonomía a las provincias fronterizas del Virreinato de Nueva España, actual norte de México y suroeste de Estados Unidos. El objetivo de su creación era establecer un gobierno unificado en asuntos políticos, militares y fiscales. Sin embargo, la Comandancia General experimentó importantes cambios en su administración debido a la experimentación para encontrar el mejor gobierno para la región fronteriza, así como a las luchas burocráticas internas. Su creación se inscribe en el marco de las reformas borbónicas y forma parte de un esfuerzo por dinamizar el crecimiento económico y demográfico de la región para evitar la invasión de las potencias extranjeras. Durante su existencia, la Comandancia General abarcaba las provincias de Sonora y Sinaloa, Nueva Vizcaya, Las Californias, Nuevo México, Nuevo Santander, Nuevo Reyno de León, Coahuila (antes Nueva Extremadura) y Texas.
