Nació en Orihuela del Tremedal, Teruel, el 15 de septiembre de 1951,[2] en el seno de una familia de educadores.[3] Estudió en un instituto de Teruel, donde fue alumno de José Antonio Labordeta (quien, al parecer, consideraba a Losantos “como un hijo” en aquella época y posteriormente se preguntó por su “transformación” personal) y de José Sanchis Sinisterra. [2] [4] Fue residente en el Colegio Menor “San Pablo”, y obtuvo la medalla de plata al Mérito Estudiantil y la tercera clase del premio literario “Colegio Pizarro” [5].

Jiménez Losantos llegó a Barcelona a los 20 años, y estudió Filosofía y Letras (sección Filología Románica) en la Universidad de Barcelona,[6] obteniendo la licenciatura por la lectura de una tesina sobre Valle Inclán.[2] Fue miembro de Bandera Roja y del PSUC durante su estancia en Barcelona.[7] Desencantado a raíz de un viaje a la China maoísta y de la lectura de El archipiélago Gulag, se distanció del comunismo en 1976.[2]
